Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local resident.

This has never been a common moth in the county, and Porritt was only aware of three records. There have not been many since, and our last record is still the 1986 record from Thorpe Marsh near Doncaster. Nationally the range has shrunk considerably and it has disappeared from large areas of its former distribution, especially in midland counties, so the comments in Sutton and Beaumont below would appear to be over-optimistic. One would have thought that this was an unlikely species to recolonise, however, one was trapped in north Nottinghamshire in 2021, not far from our southern border, so it remains a possibility we might see this rather spectacular moth at some time in the future.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There are five recent records for his species in the County, three from the south of VC63. This moth is reputedly spreading north, having moved up through Lincolnshire in the 1970s (Diddington & Johnson, 1983).

Recorded in 9 (5%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1827.
Last Recorded in 1986.
