Yorkshire Status: Thinly distributed resident.

This species is widespread across the county in small numbers wherever poplars grow. 90% of our records are of single moths, so it is either present in small numbers or does not come strongly to light. The national distribution has altered recently with moths recorded as far north as central Scotland. Numbers and distribution in Yorkshire seem to be stable. Do not confuse this species with the later-flying and much less common Figure of Eight - this is a common typo!

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: The first County record is uncertain, since that quoted in the 1970 list was taken at Totley, now in South Yorkshire, but originally in Derbyshire (VC57). Since then it has spread widely over the eastern half of the County (though very thinly in north VC62) and is likely to be taken in small numbers wherever a light trap is run as far west as Burley-in-Wharfedale and Bradford. There is no VC65 record.

Recorded in 123 (62%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1929.
Last Recorded in 2023.
