Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species flies early in the year on sunny days in birch woodland, flying around the tops of the trees before the leaves come out. It sometimes comes down to ground level if you are lucky. The flight time has become earlier in recent years and we have had records as early as the last week in February. Increased numbers of records in some recent years are probably due to fine sunny weather in late March so it is tricky to comment on how well it is doing in the county. It is well distributed apart from the north-west and the south-east of the county where there is a lack of suitable habitata.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: A fairly local insect, found in well-established birch areas where it flies actively in sunshine. There are now several known localities in all vice-counties except VC65.

Recorded in 73 (37%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
