Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

Common Carpet is one of our commonest moths, occurring all over the county. The larvae feed on bedstraws and cleavers. The situation seems unchanged from when Porritt first declared it to be "extensive everywere" and "very common throughout the county". It is often disturbed by day. It is quite possible for inexperienced observers to mistake it for Wood Carpet, Galium Carpet or Small Argent and Sable - all much less common species. If in any doubt, it's likely to be Common Carpet.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded from all five vice-counties and often seen more during the day when flushed from cover than at light. Several species of bedstraw are used as larval foodplants and P. Q. Winter reports finding larvae on hedge bedstraw and lady's bedstraw and observing ovipositing on cleavers.

Recorded in 181 (91%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1846.
Last Recorded in 2023.
