Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

Porritt's comments that this species is "abundant among rose, probably everywhere" is not too far off the mark nowadays, though perhaps "abundant" is too strong a word as it is not usually seen in big numbers. 75% of our records are of single moths and it is rarely seen in double figures. Certainly it seems to occur in any decent habitat with wild rose, and is commonly seen in gardens. It is a welcome moth to find in spring when most of the catch seems to be of Orthosia species.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Records are fairly thinly scattered across all five vice-counties, it is locally common in areas where wild rose is found. The early flight period of this moth (March and April) may mean it is under recorded.

Recorded in 126 (63%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1847.
Last Recorded in 2024.
