Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

A widespread and common moth all over the county, both in the wooded lowlands where the larvae feed on hazels and sallows, and in the uplands where heather and bilberry are the usual food plants. The biggest counts tend to come from semi-upland areas for example 180 at Foxglove Covert, Catterick on 3/8/2018. It is an extremely variable species, some of the green forms being very attractive. Some of the drabber forms can lead to identification problems from those unfamiliar with these forms. Numbers and distribution are stable in Yorkshire.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely distributed in woodlands and heathy places throughout all five vice-counties. In the uplands, such as the North York Moors, the smaller race is plentiful and P. Q. Winter reports finding larvae abundant on heather and stunted rowan. The larger form, feeding on a number of plants including sallow, is generally distributed over the rest of the County.

Recorded in 176 (88%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1805.
Last Recorded in 2023.
