Yorkshire Status: unknown

This rather enigmatic species is mostly confined to the south and west of England, Wales and the Isle of Man. It has been lost from many of its old haunts in the east of England, but it doing better in Wales. In our 2016 report we included this as a "moth to look out for" as it appeared in Derbyshire in 2007 with several records there in subsequent years, and Cheshire in 2008 and 2011. It also appeared in the south-west of Scotland. Surprisingly we were proven to be correct as one was trapped at Austerfield on 21/8/2017. Was this to be the first of many? Winding on the clock, it hasn't been seen since, so quite what is going on with this moth is anyone's guess! The larvae feed on stitchworts and its typical habitats are old hedgerows and the margins of damp mossy woodland. Whilst a little similar to some other Carpet moths, it is fairly distinctive with a double-toothed outer edge to the dark central cross band.
