Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species was unknown to Porritt and the first Yorkshire record with a definite date is 1969. Judging by the number of records we receive, you could be forgiven for thinking this was an uncommon species, but if you are one of the few people who put traps in spruce woodland, you will catch good numbers, eg 30 at Hutton Lowcross Woods on 22/5/2004. It is a rather attractive and well marked species, with a prominent discal spot, strong cross lines and a curved leading edge to the wing. It is unmistakeable when fresh. Its name is a bit of a misnomer as it is considerably larger than our really tiny Pugs such as Slender and Maple. Numbers seem to be stable in the county.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: A very local species in Yorkshire but now recorded from all five vice-counties. It is widely distributed in spruce plantations all over Northumberland and Durham and still increasing its range (Dunn & Parrack, 1986), so it may well also turn out to be more widespread in Yorkshire.

Recorded in 73 (37%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2023.
