Yorkshire Status: Scarce and very local resident.

A very nice history of Dark Bordered Beauty in Yorkshire can be found in the YNU's "100 species project" where Peter Mayhew's account can be found at More Info . This lovely and extremely important species is feature as the logo for our web site and you will see it sitting proudly at the top right corner of each page. The population remains low and under threat. Since Peter wrote this account, the situation has not improved. In 2024 his summary was:

It was another miserable year for Dark Bordered Beauty at Strensall, the sixth in a row, and we now count ourselves fortunate that the population is still going. This was in complete contrast to some of the Scottish populations which saw record counts. On the transect, moths were seen in three sections, but the maximum count was just four, and only nine were seen overall in a flight season that lasted only eight days. The weather did not help; it was generally wet and windy. Moths were seen in just two places outside the transect route: up to six at a site in the firing zone, and a single moth elsewhere.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Strensall Common (VC62) is a nationally famous site for this species and here its status has been charted from 1894 to the present by the York and District Field Naturalists' Society (JP pers. comm.). With probably only one other English site and a few in Scotland it is heartening that it is still plentiful at Strensall, with records right up to 1988.
