Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and fairly widespread resident.

This is one of the commoner species to appear in the trap in late winter and early spring. It is widespread over much of the county. It might not be quite as common as in Porritt's time when he labelled it "abundant everywhere" in 1883, but numbers and distribution in Yorkshire seem to be stable. Like many spring moths, it can occasionally appear before the end of the year. The females, which are almost wingless, are not often encountered. In suitable wooded habitat numbers can be quite high, for example 49 at Bellflask near Ripon on 26/2/2011. Melanic forms are common.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There are scattered records from all five vice-counties and most reports say it is frequent or common. Melanic forms such as ab. fuscata (Mosley) are prevalent in many areas.
