Yorkshire Status: Fairly widespread resident.

This is a moth of pine woodland where it prefers mature trees. This seems to have always been the case - in 1883 Porritt remarked "widely distributed and generally abundant in fir woods". It is quite commonly seen flying by day and comes readily to light. Counts in pine woodland are often into double figures. Numbers in Yorkshire have reduced a little in recent years. The upperwings are rarely seen as it rests with its wings held tightly together, so we never see the difference in wing colour between the two sexes.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Often common near or in coniferous plantations and occasionally away from such areas. Widely recorded in vice-counties 61 to 64 but only taken at two sites in VC65 (Harmby and Baldersby St James).

Recorded in 139 (70%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1846.
Last Recorded in 2023.
