Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This species was formerly much harder to find in Yorkshire. Porritt labelled it "not common" in 1883. It remained very elusive until the 1970s but since then numbers have risen sharply. It reached a peak probably around 2010 and since then numbers have fluctuated a little. It is currently a common moth of woodland, scrub and gardens. In good woodland habitat, numbers can be quite impressive for example 94 at Ellington Banks on 25/5/2011. The books tell us it is single brooded, but in recent years we have been getting more late records well into September. Like its sister species, White-pinion Spotted, it has a liking for hawthorn and blackthorn.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Formerly rather local, this species has increased quite dramatically in recent years both in numbers and range.
