Yorkshire Status: Scarce and local migrant/wanderer.

This attractive migrant species turns up almost every year in the county in small quantities. Like most migrant hawk-moths, the majority of these are coastal. Larvae are reported quite frequently, and although we have no evidence of a resident population in the county, it is said to be temporarily resident in counties to our south east - Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. It is permanently resident across much of Europe apart from Spain and Portugal, Northern France and much of the Low Countries. The best year so far was 2017 with 17 records.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This migrant is often absent for many years, presumably until the European population builds up to a peak and then there are large scale immigrations and it becomes established for a few years. This happened in the 1950s and again in the 1970s, when 1973 was a notable year. There have been occasional records since.
