Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This very distinctive moth is widespread all across the county in a variety of habitats; the larvae feeding on a variety of broad-leaved trees. It is quite unmistakable and when at rest does a very convincing imitation of a birch twig with its end broken. Numbers are very healthy in the county and have increased a little in recent years. In good habitat, counts commonly reach double figures. Larvae are often reported. These are also distinctive and tend to feed in groups.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and sometimes common in vice-counties 61 to 64 but only recorded as rare from two sites in VC65. It is often found in woodland and parkland situations as well as where similar conditions are created by gardens in suburban areas. Also recorded from some moorland sites in north VC62 and west VC64.

Recorded in 167 (84%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2024.
