Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

In 1907 Porritt described Common Footman as "rather local and apparently only common in the south-east." Nowadays we would describe it in quite different terms, as it a common and widespread moth across all of the county, and like most Footmen is doing very well with increased numbers. It is only single-brooded, but in recent years has been appearing both earlier and later than usual; moths having been seen on the wing from 21st May to 21st September. Counts at some sites can be very large, for example 276 at North Cliffe Wood on 9/7/2010.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded and often common in all five vice-counties. Generally most frequent away from industrial areas although it now occurs regularly on the outskirts of Leeds where lichens are still much affected by air pollution. It has also recently been found quite commonly just to the west of Sheffield (D. Whiteley per JP).
