Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is an extremely common species in our moth traps in late spring and early summer, though it is less common in some upland areas in the north-west. The larvae feed on a wide variety of herbaceous plants and the moths are seen in a variety of habitats including gardens where it can be common. Numbers trapped can be large for example 53 at Broxa Forest on 15/6/2018. Wing markings can be quite variable at times. The spots can coalesce to form streaks and sometimes we see some quite extreme aberrations. Our population seems to be healthy and numbers are stable.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded and often common over all five vice-counties. More common than S. lubricipeda (Linnaeus) in some areas, for example, around York in vice-counties 62 and 64.

Recorded in 173 (87%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1879.
Last Recorded in 2024.
