Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local ?resident and wanderer.

The first mention of this species in Yorkshire is in Robert Cooks "List of Lepidoptera captured near York" in The Entomologist in February 1842. Porritt lists this record (he is less sceptical about this than Cooke's Light Brocade) and later adds a record from Wadworth Wood (Doncaster) in 1888. The next record was from Little Horton (Bradford) in 1963, and from 1999 onwards it has appeared as single moths at a further six localities at infrequent intervals. The Spurn moth in 2023 arrived with the Light Brocade influx after south-easterly winds, but the other records are not typical of migrants or wanderers, and the distribution in central/mid-western areas poses the question as to whether we have an elusive population in the county existing at a low density. This is a moth of wooded heathland and moorland. Populations away from its stronghold in the south of England and south Wales seem to be small and fragmentary. It is probably in slow decline. This is not always an easy species to identify and can be mistaken for others such as Pale-shouldered Brocade. A good photograph or a specimen is needed in order for the record to be accepted.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There has been no confirmed Yorkshire record of this species since 1963 (YNU, 1970). Since Skinner's description of this species is, 'Widely distributed, but local, over much of the British Isles' (Skinner, 1984), it is surprising that a county the size of Yorkshire should not have more records. Lorimer (MBGBI 9) says 'apparently more local in the Yorkshire Moors', suggesting that there is more than one record. However the only Yorkshire record shown on the accompanying map would appear to be the one from Bradford (VC63) given in the last list (YNU, 1970).
