Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

"Very plentiful everywhere" said Porritt in 1883. This is still the case, though is is usually encountered in fairly low numbers. 90% of our records are of just one or two moths, though sometimes counts can reach double figures, the maximum being 42 at Gouthwaite Reservoir on 18/7/1983. Many of the largest counts are from 20 to 40 years ago, and numbers seem to have dropped off since then, though the actual number of records seems stable. The larvae feed on various woody plants, so this is a moth of woodland and scrub, though it sometimes comes into gardens. Very occasional late records in August and September are suggestive of a second brood.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and often common in all five vice-counties. Records suggest the species possibly has a preference for lower, calcareous areas.
