Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

"Abundant everywhere" said Porritt in 1883. This is still the case, as this is the commonest and most widespread of the Orthosia species, appearing in big numbers each spring across the county. Sometimes it can be less common in woodland than some of its relatives. It has a longer flight period than the other Orthosia species and in recent years we have had several records before the end of the year, as early as 13th October. Big numbers are sometimes trapped, the maximum being 470 at Ellington Banks on 23/3/2011. It can be on the wing up to early June in upland areas, but records after this date usually turn out to be typos for Setaceous Hebrew Character

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Very common throughout all five vice-counties. It is the most common of this group of moths and recorded from every type of habitat.

Recorded in 170 (85%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1806.
Last Recorded in 2024.
