Yorkshire Status: Uncommon and very local resident.

In 1883, Porritt described Shore Wainscot as "abundant at Spurn, not recorded elsewhere". In 1989 Sutton and Beaumont suggested it might be present at South Gare. This was a good prediction as it was found at Redcar in 1994 and has been recorded several times in the area since, mostly at Marske Beach. The population built up at Spurn to a maximum of 109 records in 2011 but crashed to only nine records in 2013. Things have improved a little since then, with several counts into double figures in recent years, but even so, the population seems smaller than it was 20 years ago. This is a moth of coastal sand dunes, the larvae feeding on marram grass.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: The only Yorkshire locality for this species is Spurn (VC61) where it seems well established and one or two are taken most years at light (BRS). It might reasonably be expected to also occur on the sandhills at South Gare, Redcar, which is a similar habitat to Spurn in many ways.

Recorded in 6 (3%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1874.
Last Recorded in 2023.
