Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

"Local, but usuallly not uncommon where it occurs" said Porritt in 1883, but in 1904 remarked that it had "been taken in abundance in late years, owing no doubt to the discovery of better ways to find it both as larva and imago" - there was no reliance on light trapping in those days! This has probably always been a widespread and common species in woodland and other places with ash trees including gardens. It is to be hoped that it does not suffer too much from the ravages of ash die-back as this seems to be its only food-plant. There is certainly no sign of reduced numbers at the moment, and the population in Yorkshire seems to be healthy. Counts are frequently into double figures, the maximum being 71 at Bellflask near Ripon on 7/9/2016.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded widely in vice-counties 62, 64 and 65 but usually in small numbers. Apparently rather less common in vice-counties 61 and 63 although the foodplant (ash) is frequent throughout.

Recorded in 153 (77%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2023.
