Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

In 1883 Porritt wrote "common amongst old willows and poplars. The larvae may often be found huddled together in dozens by stripping the loose bark off old willows in the daytime; or they may be collected as they rapidly ascend the trunks to feed after dusk". He would have despaired at our fixation with light traps. We have only five larval records on the database, and only one this century!

This is a fairly common moth across most of lowland Yorkshire, with most records coming from damp woodland. The population seems to be stable. We usually receive over 100 records per year. All the largest counts come from Bellflask, north of Ripon, with a maximum of 75 on 9/7/2018.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recent records for this species are quite widespread on lower ground. Most have been of adults rather than larvae which are said to be more easily found, especially on crack and white willow (SMJ pers. comm.).

Recorded in 112 (56%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1880.
Last Recorded in 2024.
