Yorkshire Status: Extinct in Yorkshire.

White-spotted Pinion used to be a commoner moth across the country. In 1883 Porritt listed records from Doncaster, Sheffield and Wakefield, and Rutherford's lists mentions one at Knaresborough in 1955. There have been none since. The situation across most of England was much the same. It was lost from most of its old haunts, and the range contracted to woodland in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, with a few outlying populations. Like many elm-feeding moths, Dutch elm disease may have been a major factor. The larvae apparently like the epicormic growth growing out of the lower trunk of mature elms. All however is not lost. In the last few years the range appears to have increased and it has popped up in one or two unusual places. It would need a considerable expansion of range however to bring it back to Yorkshire, and we would need mature elms.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Only recorded once since Porritt, at Knaresborough (VC64) in 1955 (YNU, 1970). Porritt (1883-86, 1904) had various records, all from VC63.
