Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

"Common throughout the county" said Porritt in 1907, and this is still the situation. It is widespread across Yorkshire in a variety of grassy habitats, and is often seen in gardens. It is said to be declining nationally on the bases of Rothamsted trap data but there is little evidence of this in Yorkshire. There are two main forms. f. submissa is unlikely to be mistaken for other species except perhaps for Pale-shouldered Brocade, but f. obscura could be mistaken for all sorts of species such as Confused, White Colon, Large Nutmeg, Crescent Striped or Dark Brocade. The largest numbers are usually from the Spurn area eg 124 on 6.7.1987.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely distributed and generally common in all five vice-counties, although noted as becoming scarce at Skipwith (VC61) in the 1970s (SMJ). This species is very variable which makes it very difficult to pick out odd specimens of A. furva (Denis & Schifferrnuller).
