Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

In 1907, Porritt wrote "occurs probably everywhere and in many places abundantly." It is still common and widespread across the county though a little scarcer in VC61 and 63 where it is more local. It is a moth of damp grassland, the larvae feeding on tufted hair-grass. It is often seen in other habitats such as gardens. It can be common at some sites for example 146 at Foxglove Covert, Catterick on 19/7/2013. Numbers may have dropped off a little in recent years. Males are usually easy to identify, but the smaller females can look quite different and can confuse the unwary.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Quite widely distributed and sometimes locally common in suitable damp habitats.

Recorded in 162 (81%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
