Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

In 1907 Porritt described this species as "moderately common in suitable damp places probably everywhere". This is still a fairly good description, though it is commonest in upland areas in the west and north-east of the county, and in some lowland sites such as Spurn. The larvae feed on sedges and other wetland plants, and in Yorkshire it seems most at home on boggy moorland and wet woodland, but it occurs in other habitats and can be seen at times in gardens. The maximum count is 55 at Spurn on 19/9/1970. Numbers seem to be fairly stable in the county.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Only recorded from odd sites in all five vice-counties but fairly common where it does occur. Known as a species of grassy uplands (SLS pers. comm.), it seems to be absent or rare on some moorland sites where it would be expected to occur, such as the Sheffield Moors (Garland, 1979) and Wharfedale area (WNS). Map 120 in MBGBI 10 also shows it to be absent from all but the south of the North York Moors, however we do have records scattered over much of this area.
