Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This beautiful woodland species was unknown to Porritt and was first recorded in Yorkshire when a larva was beaten from oak at Potteric Carr in 1978, with an adult trapped nearby at Rossington soon afterwards. The range expanded rapidly, and by 1983 there were records from VC61, 62 and 64, though it was not until 2000 that it was recorded in VC65. It can now be found as far north as Newcastle. It does however remain rather elusive, and 90% of our records are of single moths, implying that it might not come strongly to light. Numbers in the county are probably stable, though there is considerably fluctuation from year to year. It prefers mature oak woodland.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Since first being taken in Yorkshire in 1978 as larvae at Potteric Carr (Heppenstall, 1979), this oak feeding species has spread considerably in the County and now seems well established in many areas. There are a few older records but these are not substantiated and so have not been included below (that recorded on the Thorne Moors list (Skidmore et al., 1985) from 1969 has been found to be in error (M. Limbert pers. comm.)).

Recorded in 101 (51%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1977.
Last Recorded in 2024.
