This moth was found indoors in Balby near Doncaster on 13/8/2006 and given to Peter Greaves, a nearby moth enthusiast who took a photo whilst is was still alive. Initial enquiries did not lead to any firm identification and the matter was forgotten about for several years. In 2012, a photo was send to Charles Fletcher who was equally stumped, but carried out further enquiries which eventually resulted in the moth being sent to Martin Honey at the BMNH who compared it with species in the national collection. He confirmed that it was Lacosoma chiridoda, a North American species which feeds on oak. The usual vernacular name, Scalloped Sack-bearer, refers to the habits of the larva which build open-ended cases or "sacks" of leaves and silk in which they over-winter. This species has not been seen in the UK before. Quite how it reached Balby remains a mystery. Further details are in Atropos 46: 77.
