Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and thinly distributed or restricted resident.

We are at the northern edge of the distribution of this species. It is interesting to read the comments in Sutton and Beaumont in 1989 about a range extension, because as soon as the book was written, the range began to contract again. Nearly all of our records come from VC61 and the eastern half of VC63. In 2023 there were 82 records of 137 moths from 29 sites, making it a fairly typical year. Records as usual were from the south-eastern quarter of the county, but there were some encouraging new sites in the northern part of the range. Nationally this species does not seem to be doing well, especially in the south of England. The larvae feed on various broad-leaved trees and shrubs, the larvae forming communal webs.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There has been a dramatic range extension from the south-east since the early 1970s, Wass (VC62) being the furthest north so far and Elmley (VC63) and Markington (VC64) the furthest west.

Recorded in 65 (33%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
