In 1883 Porritt noted this species from Bramham, Sheffield, Scarborough, Sutton-on-Derwent, Wakefield and York, implying it occurred quite widely across the county. These were the most northerly records in the country. The only sniff of a record since then is mentioned in Rutherford's lists of 1970 in which he says "there is only one record since Porritt's list, for Bishop Wood, but it is undated and repeated searches have not confirmed it. It is very doubtful if it now occurs anywhere in the county."
This is an extremely similar species to Orange Underwing, so it flies around the tops of trees in March, and unless you get a good look at the antennae or the underside of the hindwing you are not going to be able to tell them apart. It is a moth of aspen woodland but the habitat is just a guide - you cannot be sure that just because it is flying round aspen rather than birch that it is this species. It is mainly a moth of southern England, but there are recent records in Lincolnshire. It is not impossible that it lurks within the county so "Orange Underwing" close to aspen in the south of the county should be examined critically if you can get one within arms reach of your net.
Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: No confirmed record since Porritt (1983-86). He recorded it from Sutton upon Derwent (VC61, York, Scarborough (VC62), Wakefield, Sheffield (VC63) and Bramham (VC64). It has recently been rediscovered in Kesteven Forest in Lincolnshire and is apparently quite common there (Duddington & Johnson, 1983).
