Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and fairly widespread resident.

A species of flowery grassland, widespread across the county. It has a wider diet than the previous species; the larvae usually feeding on meadow vetchling, red clover and greater bird's-foot trefoil. The comments from 1989 imply that this species is a lot more common now than it was then, and it certainly seems to have increased its national range. We receive a lot of records of Five-spot Burnet but (up to now) these have always been typos for Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet or misidentifications, as it is doubtful whether Five-spot Burnet has ever occurred in the county.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This species is still abundant on restricted sites in the far west of Calderdale in VC63 and the Harrogate district in VC64 (also see notes on Z. filipendulae (Linnaeus) above). It has now been recorded from all five vice-counties. There are two fairly distinct forms of this species found in Yorkshire: a large, dark type found on the coast at Filey and Scarborough, and a smaller, paler inland form (Tremewan and Classey, 1970). Whilst these were treated as separate subspecies, current opinion suggests that they intergrade and are collectively as ssp. latomarginata (Tutt).

Recorded in 141 (71%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
