Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local resident.

This is a rare moth in Yorkshire and is the sort of species that might be hiding under our noses in small populations. It is a moth of heathery heathland, though away from its strongholds in the south it is very hard to find. Porritt said it was taken "not uncommonly on the Thorne side of Thorne Waste" and that the Rev Ash took it "rather freely" at Skipwith Commmon but he seems unaware of any other sites. Between 1960 and 1986 it was reported (twice each) from Allerthorpe and Skipwith commons but has not been seen there since. The most recent records are from Hatfield Moors in 2013 and 2021. It seems likely therefore that this somewhat elusive species is able to exist at a low population on any of our lowland heaths, which makes one wonder how readily it is attracted to light. It will be interesting to see where it turns up next.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There were no records of this species for several years until it was rediscovered on Strensall Common (VC62) in July 1986 (NG). This was the species' former stronghold in the County but it had not been recorded there since 1970 (Jackson, 1971).
