Yorkshire Status: Rare and local resident.

In Porritt's day, Small Argent and Sable was described as "abundant in many localities in the south-west but not much recorded from elsewhere." Currently it has a very patchy distribution in the county with four main centres of population. It still occurs in the south west in uplands to the west of Sheffield, though we receive few records from there. Most records come from the eastern part of the North York Moors, various parts of the Yorkshire Dales and from the Bowland area. There are no recent records from lowland heaths. All of our records are of day-flying moths. This is not at moth that comes to light, and if you report one at light, it is likely to be the much more abundant Common Carpet! The two are frequently confused. The larval foodplant is heath bedstraw, and there is much habitat in the county which ought to support this moth. Its requirements are not well understood. Rarely it can be seen in good numbers, our record count being 50 at Stocks Reservoir on 14/6/2014.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Flies during the day in moorland valleys and at a few lowland localities on heaths and mosses.

Recorded in 44 (22%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1880.
Last Recorded in 2024.
