Yorkshire Status: Rare and very local resident.

in 1883 Porritt listed several locations for this species and noted that it "probably occurs in many other localities, but has been passed over as subtristata" ie the old name for Common Carpet. Few were seen until the 1970s when it became regular at Spurn, but it has not been seen there since 2012. Most of our recent records have come from eastern parts of VC63, especially at Austerfield where it is regular. It is often confused with Common Carpet but is a little larger and the white outer cross band is wider and tends not to be bisected by the thin dark line that one sees in Common Carpet. Nationally it seems to have suffered a decline and has disappeared from many areas. If you catch one and want it confirmed, don't ask us to dissect it as the genitalia of male Wood and Common Carpets are virtually identical. You could always hope that it's a female and then we might have a fighting chance.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There have been only a few records of this very local species since the 1930s. Although all our sites except Wharfedale are in the south of the County, it has been taken several times in Middleton-in-Teesdale (VC66) on the far bank of the Tees (IF; Dunn & Parrack, 1986). This would suggest it is probably also present locally in the north of our County.
