Yorkshire Status: Scarce and local resident.

Numbers of Grey Mountain Carpet have gradually reduced in recent years and it is probably a species that is not coping well with climatic change. Current management of grouse moors is also probably not helping very much. Things have certainly changed since Porritt's time when he described it as "very abundant on all the high moors in the West Riding", and the comments in Sutton and Beaumont also paint rather a rosy picture. Although it is usually encountered in small numbers, occasional records can make us think things aren't too bad in some areas - for example 50 were seen in upper Kingsdale in the extreme west of VC64 on 13/8/2020 - a remarkable count. It is a particularly rare beast in VC62, with only one record since 2016. There are also few recent records from VC63.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Found widely on moorland in vice-counties 62 to 65 and occasionally also in lower areas. Usually plentiful where it occurs and is often seen in the daytime as well as coming readily to light. There is no VC61 record.
