Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

"Common everywhere and very variable" said Porritt in 1883. This is still true today. This is a common moth all over the county, but particularly in lowland areas, as Dark Marbled Carpet to a certain extent "takes over" in upland areas. Both numbers and range seem to be stable in the county. The commonest form (truncata) with a brown central patch on the forewing is unmistakeable, as Dark Marbled Carpet does not show this form. Other forms may be confused. Melanic forms are not uncommon and often cause confusion. Sometimes it can be tricky to tell these two species apart. The most reliable feature is the longer more pointed central projection to the outer edge of the central band (both upperside and especially lowerside) of Dark Marbled Carpet. This tends to be shorter and blunter in Common Marbled Carpet. Flight time can also help. Common Marbled Carpet is double-brooded with peaks in May/June and August/September. It is uncommon in July. Dark Marbled Carpet has a single brood which peaks at the end of July or beginning of August.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and often common in lower areas and occasional elsewhere in all five vice-counties. This species is similar in appearance to C. citrata (Linnaeus) and they may occasionally be confused. However, citrata generally takes the place of this species on higher ground, although there is considerable overlap in some areas and both species seem to wander out from high population density sites.
