Yorkshire Status: Scarce and thinly distributed or restricted resident.

"Fairly common amongst alders" said Porritt in 1883, and we would find it hard to disagree with him. It is much less common than the ubiquitous July Highflyer and tends not to stray too far from its foodplant, so tends to be not too common in gardens. The big gaps in distribution probably reflect a lack of foodplant. Numbers and distribution appear to be stable in the county.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This alder feeder is seldom common. It is recorded from all five vice-counties although it appears to be rather local in VC61.
