Yorkshire Status: Extinct in Yorkshire

Slender-striped Rufous is an uncommon moth of damp heathland and moorland in the north of Scotland with no English populations. Waring mentions old records however from Widdybank Fell in Co. Durham and from Shap Fell in Westmorland and since then an old record has surfaced from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in Northumberland. He also states the it is almost certainly under-recorded due to the remoteness of the places it inhabits and its late flight season

Now a possible old Yorkshire record has surface in The Naturalist for January 1921 which states: "Phibalapteryx lapidata in Yorkshire. In a sale at Stevens' Sale Rooms some time ago, the following was included from the collection of the Honourable R. Bethell: 'Lapidata I, Upper Teesdale, Yorks., Honourable R. Bethell.'. I think this is worth being put on record, as the species is not included in the Yorkshire list, and it is recorded for a part of the county which is practically unworked, and which, from its interesting Alpine flora, should be worth closer investigation. - T. ASHTON LOFTHOUSE, Middlesbrough."

Upper Teesdale is still one of the most under-recorded parts of the county. It is unlikely that the moth still exists here but it is quite possible that this was a genuine record.
