Yorkshire Status: Rare and very local resident.

This drab and rather unexciting-looking species is not a common moth in Yorkshire. It is a buckthorn-feeder and has a similar distribution to Dark Umber, but is seen far less frequently - perhaps it is not so strongly attracted to light. Most records come from the magnesian limestone belt in the south of VC63 and the area north of Ripon. It ought to occur in the Grass Wood area but has not been seen there since the 1960s. It sometimes appears in other areas - one at Ellerburn Bank on 17/7/2022 was the first for VC62 and one at North Ferriby on 11.7.2023 was the first in VC61 since 1984.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This species has reappeared at several localities in the last few years. Buckthorn, the larval foodplant for several species in this group, is at its north-eastern limit in Yorkshire and is scarce in many areas. This may be the limiting factor on their distribution.

Recorded in 19 (10%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
