Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This species is common and widespread all across the county, and the dots on the map are probably an underestimate as comparatively few people record moths in the winter. It must be common, as the larvae are very easy to find in April and May on a variety of broadleaved trees. This is the common moth in car headlights in early winter, and a walk around some woodland in the evening in December often reveals males assembled to the virtually wingless females half way up a tree trunk. Numbers in the county are probably stable. Take care not to confuse it with the larger, paler and less common Northern Winter Moth, which often has protruding hindwings.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Found in all five vice-counties. Common in most habitats and often noticed by the light of car headlamps in country lanes.

Recorded in 132 (66%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1846.
Last Recorded in 2024.
