Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

This is a common moth across most of the county apart from some western districts and is rather attractive (for a Pug). It is one of the easiest Pugs to identify. The only species you might confuse it with is Bordered Pug. If you were having an even worse day you might identify it as a bird dropping. It's scientific name implies it feeds on knapweed which indeed it does at times, but it is polyphageous on a wide variety of plants. It occurs in two overlapping broods, the second being larger. Numbers in the county are healthy.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Sparsely recorded from all five vice-counties. Most frequent in the south, although not seen near Selby (VC61/64) for many years (SMJ pers. comm.).

Recorded in 130 (65%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1880.
Last Recorded in 2023.
