Yorkshire Status: Scarce and local - becoming resident.

This conifer-feeding species is rapidly expanding its range. It was first found in the UK in 1959 in Cornwall and has been slowly spreading. The rate of spread seems to have accelerated in the last few years and on 21/9/2022 the first Yorkshire record turned up in a trap at West Melton. In 2023 there were three more in the south-east of the county, at Spurn (Kilnsea), Flamborough and North Ferriby. It will be interesting to monitor the spread of this species as it is likely to colonise the county fairly fast. The scientific name refers to its continental food plant, Juniperus phoenicea whereas in the UK the larvae feed on non-native species, Monterey, Lawson’s and Leyland cypresses. Whereas many Pugs are tricky to identify, Cypress Pug is easy. The oblique cross-lines and black stripes make confusion with any other species unlikely.
