Yorkshire Status: Rare and local resident.

This is a fairly common moth in the south of England but is rather local in Yorkshire as its foodplant, spindle, is less common in the north. Most of our records come from the magnesian limestone belt running down the centre of the county as this tends to support a good growth of spindle and it tends not to stray far from its foodplant. It is also recorded from scattered locations in other parts of the county, particularly in the Pickering area and central parts of VC61 in recent years. It is a rather attractive species and a nice one to find in your moth trap. You should have no difficulty identifying it as it tends not to vary in appearance. It has two broods in Yorkshire and these rarely overlap. It is only ever recorded in small numbers and 90% of our records are of single moths.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Despite being very restricted in its foodplant (spindle tree) which is rather thinly spread in the North of England, this species has been recorded from many more sites in recent years. It would also be expected to occur in the limestone areas of VC61 and VC65.

Recorded in 36 (18%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
