Yorkshire Status: Possibly extinct.

This curious heather-feeding heathland species has only been seen once in Yorkshire. It was taken at light in 1979 at Thorne Moors just on the Yorkshire side of the Yorkshire/Lincolnshire border. The identity was confirmed by dissection so there is no doubt it is correct. There were at least two records on the Lincolnshire side of the border soon afterwards to there seems to be (or have been) a colony in the area. The nearest populations are well to our south, on heathland in the south and south-west of England. These records therefore must represent a relict population from long ago when heathlands were more widely distributed. It was certainly unknown to Porritt. The big question of course is whether it still occurs in the area. There are no macro moths that you could confuse it with, but it could be passed over as an odd large micro of some description. If it is still present, conservation of such an isolated colony would be a big priority.
