Yorkshire Status: Extinct.

Orange Moth was present in the county in Porritt's time as in 1883 he noted records from Bishop's Wood, Edlington Wood, Sheffield and at York where it was labelled "common". It has not been seen since. This appeared to be its northern limit at the time. It is a moth of old woodland and the larvae feed on a variety of broadleaved trees. The main population is in the south of England though there is a relict population in ancient woodland in central Lincolnshire. Wouldn't it nice if it was rediscovered in ancient woodland somewhere in the south of Yorkshire!

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Not recorded since Porritt (1883-86) when it was found in a few localities as far north as York. Apparently this species is still found in Lincolnshire (Duddington & Johnson, 1983) so a slight northwards range extension could see this species in the county once more.
