Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

In 1883 Porritt wrote "abundant everywhere but more partial to gardens than woods". This is still true today, and you are more likely to catch Mottled Beauty in woodland and Willow Beauty in your garden. Our biggest catches have certainly come from gardens. Late records well into October and sometimes even into November have become commoner recently and are suggestive of a second brood or possibly even a third, and these moths are often smaller. It is thriving in the county and we receive over 2,000 records each year. Melanic forms are fairly common and can lead to difficulties in identification. Typically marked fresh individuals are usually easy to identify - the convergence of the two cross lines tends not to vary.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and often common over all five vice-counties, especially in gardens and parks.

Recorded in 160 (80%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1879.
Last Recorded in 2023.
