Yorkshire Status: Rather local resident.

This is our largest resident species of moth. Since 2004 it has been resident in the south-east of the county with increasing numbers of records, mostly at Spurn. In 2010 there was further spread, both up the coast and into VC63, and by 2016 there was evidence of colonisation of VC62 and 64. As at the end of 2023, it had not quite reached VC65 though this is surely just a matter of time. Record numbers were reported in 2022 with over 100 records. 2023 brought fewer records but further spread to the north-west. This species was known to Porritt who mentions several records including larvae. The provenence of these is arguable, but the current Atlas shows many old dots in the north of England and it is likely that its range was once greater. Larvae prefer to feed on privet, but will also use ash, holly, lilac, guelder rose and other trees and shrubs.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Occasional specimens of this moth are found in the County but it has never been clear whether these have been residents or immigrants or whether accidental or deliberate introduction has occurred. There are a few recent records, one of which is known to be an importation.
