Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local resident.

The last confirmed records are still from 1987 and it has not been seen in the county since. Rather frustratingly every year or two we get records of one or other of the Bee Hawk-moth species but usually from inexperienced observers and never accompanied by a photograph. We cannot be sure that these are not Humming-bird Hawk-moths or even Bee-flies. It is not impossible however that this species still lurks undetected somewhere in the county. It should be looked for in calcareous grassland with devil's-bit scabious on sunny days in June, in the late morning and early afternoon.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: A specimen of this species was observed both at rest and on the wing at High Batts Nature Reserve (VC64) on 13.6 and 21.6.1987 by S. P. Worwood (H&DNS Rep. 1987). There have been two other reports from the Harrogate District: one in Harrogate on 27.6.1986 by A. Mettam and one at Sutton Grange in 1987. However the insect did not settle on either occasion making a definite identification impossible. The High Batts record is the first confirmed County record since Porritt (1883-86) although there is the 'note' mentioned in the last list (YNU, 1970) of two at Helmsley (VC62) in 1944.
