Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is a common and widespread moth in central and eastern parts of the county. It is rare in the west and avoids the higher ground. This seems to have been the case as long ago as 1883 when Porritt said he had only taken it once in Huddersfield. It is a moth of open scrubby areas, gardens and woodland edges, the larvae feeding on a wide variety of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Larvae are distinctive and often reported, most commonly on hawthorn, willow, birch and elm. Our population is healthy and numbers are stable. We commonly receive small numbers of records of moths in September and October from a second brood.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Often common both as larvae and as adults at light. Found in all five vice-counties.
