Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local vagrant.

Porritt mentioned several records in 1883 - "of this beautiful and rare species, several specimens are recorded", and he mentions one on Raincliffe Moors in 1871, one at Scarborough in 1870, two in 1877 "in stubble fields on the east coast", and he also says that a Yorkshire example is mentioned in Stephens (1827/28). In 1904 he added "a fine specimen taken in Grave Hill Lane, Beverley, twenty years ago". It has not been seen in the county since.

This is an immigrant species and good numbers can sometimes reach the UK. Unfortunately it seems to dislike coming north, and all records are in the south of England. There was a huge influx in 2022 and we eagerly anticipated a Yorkshire record. We were disappointed!

Sutton and Beaumont, 1987: Not recorded since Porritt (1883-86, 1904). The record given by Skinner (1984), of a specimen of this rare migrant being taken at Rudston (VC61) on 18.9.1980 is an error. (Probably resulting from a confusing juxtaposition of text in the Entomologist's Record where a report occurred from a different county (93, 3-4 p. 53, 1981)).

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 3 (2%) of 200 10k Squares.
